A natural stone bathtub should be specified as a coordinated architectural product, not selected from an image and handed to the contractor at the end of the project. Material, dimensions, interior geometry, finish, drain and overflow, structural load, access route, lifting strategy, shop drawings and delivery scope all affect whether the final installation works.
This checklist is designed for interior designers, architects, specifiers, contractors and hospitality teams working with made-to-order stone tubs. It is a coordination framework, not a substitute for project-specific engineering, plumbing requirements or local codes.

1. Define the design intent before choosing the stone
Start with the role the bathtub is meant to play in the room. Is it a quiet spa object, a dark monolithic centerpiece, a strongly veined material statement, or a sculptural form positioned on a major view axis? The answer affects both geometry and material.
Record the intended user, project type, room size, tub location, primary viewing direction and whether the bathtub is residential, hospitality, wellness or another contract application. This prevents material selection from becoming disconnected from the architecture.

2. Specify the actual stone, not just “marble” or “granite”
A material family is not a complete specification. “White marble,” “black granite” or “blue quartzite” can encompass very different visual movement, mineral structure and block availability.
For a made-to-order natural stone bathtub, the project team should establish:
- stone name and material family;
- acceptable background tone and veining or mineral movement;
- whether an actual block, slab or material-direction photograph must be approved;
- acceptable natural variation, mineral marks and pattern direction;
- any areas where visual continuity is especially important.
Natural stone cannot be expected to reproduce a reference photograph exactly. The approval process should establish a material direction, not promise a geological duplicate.

3. Put real bathtub dimensions on the plan
Do not place a generic bathtub symbol and assume the selected product will fit later. Use the actual outside dimensions and, where available, the true plan outline.
Review overall length, width and height together with interior basin dimensions, approximate interior depth, rim width and base footprint. A 72-inch tub can have a substantially different usable basin and floor condition from another 72-inch tub.
The current rectangular Virelle reference, for example, is 72 × 36 × 22 in, while the sculptural Celeste reference is 80 × 42 × 28 1/2 in. These are not simply two sizes of the same object: their geometry, height and floor relationship are different.

4. Specify finish by surface zone
“Honed” or “polished” may not be enough if the bathtub intentionally combines multiple surface treatments. A project can use a refined bathing interior with a more textured exterior, or a polished stone that reveals a deeper color than the same stone in a bush-hammered or lychee-textured finish.
Identify the required finish for:
- interior basin;
- rim;
- outer walls;
- base or pedestal;
- natural void filling or surface treatment where relevant, particularly for travertine;
- any special tactile or hand-finished zones.
The approved finish should be compatible with the specific material and intended use. Care requirements should also follow the actual stone and surface treatment.
5. Coordinate the drain before fabrication
Drain location is a project datum, not a decorative detail. Do not assume every freestanding stone tub uses a centered drain. Current OIXDESIGN references include both centered and offset conditions depending on the model.
Confirm:
- drain position relative to tub centerlines;
- waste opening and fitting interface;
- overflow requirement and location, if applicable;
- access for trap and service;
- finished floor build-up and waterproofing;
- whether any drain fitting is included or supplied separately.
The final rough-in should be based on the approved project drawing and confirmed plumbing components.
6. Coordinate the tub filler and hand shower
Stone tubs are commonly paired with floor-mounted or wall-mounted fittings. The faucet specification affects clearances, reach and site rough-in.
For floor-mounted fillers, confirm the body location relative to the tub rim, spout reach into the basin, hand-shower hose movement and floor structure below the fixture. For wall-mounted fillers, confirm projection, centerline and relationship to the actual tub position.
Faucet hardware should not be assumed to be included with the bathtub unless the written quotation explicitly says so.
7. Obtain verified load information for structural review
Never use a generic “average stone bathtub weight” for structural design. Finished weight depends on material density, wall thickness, base geometry, interior hollowing and custom dimensions.
The structural team should use verified product-specific information when available and evaluate the complete operating condition, including the finished empty bathtub, water and occupants. The engineer of record or other qualified structural professional should determine how that load is supported in the actual building.

8. Design the access route before the building closes
The bathtub can fit the room and still fail the project if it cannot reach the room. Solid-stone pieces are rigid and heavy, so access should be studied before door openings, glazing, stairs or ceiling conditions make the route impossible.
Check:
- truck and receiving access;
- crate dimensions when available;
- loading dock, curb or site unloading conditions;
- door and gate widths;
- hallway turning radii;
- stairs and landings;
- elevator size and rated capacity;
- temporary openings;
- crane, hoist, forklift or other lifting requirements;
- final path from unpacking point to setting location.
For difficult sites, the handling strategy should be discussed during design development rather than on delivery day.
9. Use the shop drawing as the controlling fabrication document
Marketing images, renderings and preliminary dimensions help with selection, but they should not control fabrication or rough-in. Before production, the approved shop drawing should consolidate the final project decisions.
A stone bathtub shop drawing should typically show or identify, as applicable:
- overall length, width and height;
- plan, elevation and section geometry;
- interior basin profile and depth;
- rim and base dimensions;
- drain position;
- overflow configuration;
- plumbing interface;
- finish requirements;
- approved custom details;
- relevant fabrication tolerances or notes.
Do not release fabrication while major project information is still unresolved.
10. Separate material approval from drawing approval
These are two different decisions. A beautiful stone block does not confirm the tub geometry, and an approved drawing does not confirm that the selected stone’s visual direction has been accepted.

11. Confirm what “delivery” includes
Heavy-freight delivery and final placement are not the same service. A written quotation should define the destination and included freight scope.
Do not assume standard freight includes indoor placement, stairs, elevator carry, crane service, rigging, unpacking, debris removal or plumbing installation. If the project requires special handling, identify it early enough for the correct local equipment and team to be arranged.
12. Plan installation as a local professional scope
The local project team should confirm floor readiness, waterproofing, drain alignment, lifting method, protection of finished surfaces, final setting, plumbing connection and any required inspection or code compliance.

13. For hospitality and multi-unit work, add a repeatability plan
For hotels, resorts, spas and multi-unit residences, specification is not only about one approved bathtub. The team should also define how natural variation, finish, dimensions, quantity, production sequence and delivery phases will be controlled across the order.
Consider:
- acceptable range of stone variation across multiple pieces;
- sample or block approval protocol;
- room-type matrix and tub model by room;
- consistent drain/faucet coordination;
- phased production and delivery requirements;
- site storage and receiving capacity;
- replacement or attic-stock strategy if relevant to the project.
